Pain Management

Back Pain

Some people go for surgery, and often have more pain thereafter. Others go on with their lives and maybe accompany their days with massage, acupuncture, and/or especially hypnotic trance states, i.e. mind/body processes that sever the pain from the brain. Why submit to invasive surgery when you might achieve better results by using alternative medicine???

Were you and I meant to walk upright? We are the only species that do. And our miraculous spines made up of muscles, ligaments, nerves, and bones - - - maybe can't keep up with our daily stressful on - the - go lives.

Would you believe that we have 24 vertebrae that protect our spines? We have 23 inner tubes (spongy discs) that respect and protect our vertebrae. They are made up of cartilage. There are nerves - nerves - - - and more nerves that merge from the spine and its bones. And there are muscles that wrap around the entire package like rubber bands.

Now - is this miraculous structure an establishment to support our daily lives? I don't think so. It has proven not to be.

Hours leaning over a computer, days of lifting baby, household chores, and maybe a career or hobby which tugs at your back... these are but a few of the many sources which finally cause the great structure to give way. This results in back pain and perhaps even falling down with the inability to stand up again. This happened to one of my patients, while on vacation in New Orleans.

Bed rest, which used to be prescribed by physicians has been found to only worsen the situation. I personally can attest to that one, as I too have experienced the problem. Add a dose of depression as a side effect from the boredom of lying in bed and focusing on the pain and fantasizing possible surgery... and you really are in bad shape.

Instead, see a psychologist who specializes in pain management and hypnotherapy. This may well alleviate the pain (sever the pain from the brain). It will also cause you to accept the positive, eliminate the negative, and say goodbye to the accompanying anxiety and depression. No, it won't repair the tissue damage, but surgery often doesn't either... and sometimes even makes matters worse. Repair of one disc can cause pressure on another and result in slippage of the next disc in line. I also have seen many patients who have intensive increased pain as a result of back surgery.

So... be good to yourself. Learn to live with it! Find a good licensed psychologist who practices hypnotherapy. Make sure that person is skilled in pain management. She/he will work with you to gain control, with your subconscious mind, of the pain. You will manage to sever the relay system between the pain and the brain, and you will ultimately "forget" the pain and go on with your life. Then, instead, you can place your focus on bigger and more exciting goals to maximize your life. One of my co-authors has thanked me for keeping him from surgery. I had a real hard time convincing him to get the surgery out of his mind and give hypnosis a chance. It worked!

I have helped many people like him. If it's of any encouragement, most people will experience back problems by the time they reach their late 40's and early 50's. As we humans live longer lives, the back gives out. It can't put up with the stresses and strains of daily life.

Is it of any further encouragement that your favorite pet, even though he walks on "all fours", may join you in back problems? We had to euthanize our poodle when he was 16 years old when he fell prey to back disc slippage. Instead of walking, he was sliding across the floor. Although it has been many years, I can still picture this unpleasant scene. Had I been more aware at that time, I would have given him dog hypnotherapy. It may have prolonged his ultimate trip to poodle heaven.

Do you have back pain or know someone who does? Do that person or yourself a favor...read this article very carefully and heed its advice.
